In our faith journey, we often encounter various callings and purposes that shape our lives. Yet, amidst all these different vocations and roles, one central and foundational calling surpasses them all—our calling to Jesus Christ for Apostle Paul, “urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called” (Ephesians 4:1 ESV). In this article, we will explore the profound truth that Jesus answers our spiritual needs and the essence and purpose of our lives. Let us deep dive into Scripture and discover the significance of Jesus as our ultimate calling.

The Calling to Follow Jesus

As believers, our primary calling is to follow Jesus. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus extends this invitation to His disciples, saying, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” This calling is not merely an invitation to a specific task or occupation but a lifelong commitment to walk in His footsteps. It involves surrendering our will to His and aligning our lives with His teachings. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24). Jesus taught that one must deny themselves and take up their cross. He means that the cross is not a symbol of self-promotion or affirmation but a recognition that one cannot save oneself. These two concepts are the same. Our calling to Jesus is a call to a deep, personal relationship with Him, where we find purpose, fulfillment, and eternal significance.

Living in Response to the Calling

When we respond to the calling to Jesus, it transforms the way we live. Ephesians 4:1 encourages us to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called. It means living with humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love (Ephesians 4:2). Our lives should reflect the character of Jesus as we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, producing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). We are called to be salt and light in the world, showcasing Christ’s love, grace, and truth (Matthew 5:13-16). Our calling to Jesus compels us to live differently, seeking righteousness and holiness in every area of our lives (1 Peter 1:15-16).

Unity in the Body of Christ

Another significant aspect of our calling to Jesus is unity within the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:3 emphasizes the importance of maintaining the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. As followers of Jesus, we are called to love one another, bear with one another, and strive for unity, just as Jesus prayed for His disciples in John 17:20-23. We are all part of one body, with Jesus as the head (1 Corinthians 12:12-13). Our calling to Jesus unites us in one faith, hope, and Lord (Ephesians 4:4-5). Therefore, let us set aside differences, extend grace, and work towards building a community of believers that reflects the love and unity found in Jesus Christ.

Life Application

Understanding that Jesus is our calling has significant implications for our lives. It means seeking a personal relationship with Him, surrendering our lives to His lordship, and following His teachings. It means living with humility, gentleness, and love towards others, reflecting His character. It means embracing unity within Christ’s body and building a Christ-centered community. As we go about our daily lives, remember that Jesus is our ultimate calling. May we seek to honor Him in all we do, and may our lives testify to His transforming power. Let us embrace our calling to Jesus with passion and dedication, finding purpose, fulfillment, and eternal significance in Him.

Jesus is not just a part of our lives; He is our calling—the very essence and purpose of our existence.
